Central London jump start price

Jump start
from£80

The total depends on where the car is and how easy it is to reach, and is confirmed before dispatch.

If it will not start
recovery from£80

If the car needs moving to a garage or home, recovery is agreed with you before it goes ahead.

  • What is agreed before dispatch: the total payable price, and what applies if the car cannot be started.
  • What is separate: anything beyond the jump start itself, such as recovery to a garage, is quoted and agreed with you first.

How a Central London jump start works

1. Call or WhatsApp

Send the street or car park name, the level and bay, the registration or make and model, and what happens when you try to start it. The WhatsApp button opens a message with the questions already laid out.

2. We check the job

We confirm the vehicle is suitable, check availability and tell you the total price and when we expect to attend. Nothing is sent until you agree.

3. The operator attends

An operator attends at the agreed position. Have the keys ready, and the access sorted if there is a barrier, gate or building to get through.

4. Started, or next steps

If the car starts, you are on your way. If it will not, we tell you what we found and agree the next step with you, whether that is a garage or recovery.

Have this ready and the call takes minutes

  • Exact position: street, or car park name, level and bay. In Central London a postcode alone can be a building entrance while the car is several levels below.
  • The vehicle: registration, make, model and year, and whether it is petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric.
  • What happens: clicking, dim lights, a dark dashboard, or the engine turning but not firing.
  • The keys: and whether the car is locked or has been left unused for days.
  • Access: barrier, intercom, fob, gate or height restriction, and who can let the operator in.
  • Where it is: if the car is in a live traffic lane, see the safety section below before anything else.

Why a battery goes flat in the middle of London

Most Central London flat batteries have one of a few ordinary causes. Knowing which applies helps you tell us what happened, and helps us tell you whether a jump start is likely to work.

  • Short trips and stop-start traffic. A battery is recharged while the engine runs, and a short drive through slow traffic gives it little time to recover what the starter used.
  • A car left parked. A car left in a car park or on a street for days or weeks can lose charge, because electrical systems keep drawing a small current even when the car is switched off.
  • Something left on. Interior lights, a dash camera or a charger left plugged in can run a battery down overnight.
  • An ageing battery. Batteries wear out. One that is several years old may restart after a jump and then fail again, which is why a test is worth having.
  • Cold weather. Cold makes a weak battery work harder, so a battery that coped in summer can fail on the first cold morning.

If the car has gone flat more than once recently, say so on the call. It usually points to a battery that needs replacing or a fault that a jump start will not cure.

Parking, car parks and access in Central London

Underground and multi-storey car parks. Many Central London cars are in a basement or on a high level. Send the building or car park name, the level and the bay, and mention any intercom, fob, locked gate or height barrier. Access has to be arranged with whoever manages the building or car park.

Yellow lines and red routes. The Highway Code (rule 238) says you must not wait or park on yellow lines during the times shown on nearby time plates, and double yellow lines mean no waiting at any time. Rule 247 says not to load or unload where there are yellow markings on the kerb and upright signs show restrictions are in place. On TfL red routes, specially marked and signed bays show where and when loading and unloading is permitted, and stopping outside them can lead to a penalty charge notice. See the Highway Code and TfL's red routes page, and always follow the signs where the car is.

Tell us where the car is stopped. If it is on a restricted street, a red route or in a bay with a time limit, say so on the call so the operator can plan where to work safely.

Will a jump start fix it?

A jump start restarts a car with a flat battery. It does not repair a battery, and it does not fix everything that stops a car starting.

Clicking, dim lights or nothing at all

This often points to a flat battery, and a jump start is the right first step. A worn battery may fail again soon after, so it is worth having it tested.

The engine turns but will not fire

That is usually not a battery problem, and a jump start will not help. Fuel and ignition faults need a different fix.

It starts, then dies again

A car that keeps going flat or stops soon after a jump may have a charging fault. Repeated jump starts are not a repair.

Hybrid or electric

The 12 volt battery and the procedure depend on the model, so check the handbook. A hybrid or electric car is best avoided as the helper vehicle, and a boost does not charge the traction battery.

Stop-start cars

The connection points matter. The AA advises connecting the black lead to a suitable earth point on the engine or chassis rather than the negative terminal.

A damaged or leaking battery

If a battery looks damaged or is leaking, do not attempt a jump start. Call for qualified help instead.

The stop-start, damaged battery and helper-vehicle points follow the AA's guidance on using jump leads, which also advises not removing the leads while either engine is running.

Stuck in a live traffic lane? Safety comes first

Do not try to jump start a car in a live lane. The Highway Code (rule 276) says to get your vehicle off the road if possible, to use your hazard warning lights if it is causing an obstruction, and not to stand, or let anybody else stand, between your vehicle and oncoming traffic. Once the car is somewhere safe, or if it needs to be moved, call us and we will say what is possible. Read the rules in the Highway Code.

Central London jump start questions

How much does a jump start in Central London cost?

From £80. The total depends on where the car is and how easy it is to reach, and it is agreed with you before dispatch. Anything beyond the jump start itself, such as recovery to a garage, is quoted and agreed with you first.

What if the car will not start after the jump?

Then we say so and agree the next step with you. A jump start cannot fix a starter, fuel or charging fault. If the car needs to be moved, car recovery in Central London starts from £80.

How quickly can you attend in Central London?

Call with the exact position of the car and the vehicle details. We check availability, confirm the total price before dispatch and tell you when we expect to attend. Barriers, height limits and restricted streets can affect when help reaches you.

Can you jump start a car in an underground or multi-storey car park?

Possibly, subject to access and the vehicle. Send the car park name, the level, the bay and any height restriction, and tell us who can let the operator in. Access to a car park has to be arranged with whoever manages it.

My car is parked on a yellow line or a red route. Does that matter?

Yes, tell us. Stopping and loading rules depend on the markings and signs where the car is. See the Highway Code and TfL's red routes page linked on this page, and give us the street so we can plan where the operator can safely work.

Can you help with a hybrid, an electric car or a van?

Send the registration, make, model, year and symptoms so suitability can be checked. A hybrid or electric car is best avoided as the helper vehicle, and a jump start does not charge an electric car's traction battery. The correct procedure for the vehicle with the flat battery depends on the model, so the handbook matters.

Do you work at night and at weekends?

We answer calls 24 hours a day. Tell us the time and where the car is, and we confirm availability and the total price before dispatch.

Which parts of Central London do you cover?

We have a page for each of the areas listed above, from Westminster, Soho and Mayfair to the City, Bloomsbury and King's Cross. If your street is not named, give us the exact postcode and we confirm whether we can attend.
