South West and South East London

People use "south west" and "south east" London loosely, and there is no official dividing line. For planning a move it helps to think of three groups: the south west (Wandsworth, Merton, Kingston, Richmond and Sutton), the inner south (Lambeth and Southwark) and the south east (Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley), with Croydon in between. The table below sets out the areas in each.

Areas by borough

Some areas straddle a boundary. Clapham is shared by Lambeth and Wandsworth, Dulwich by Southwark and Lambeth, and Blackheath by Lewisham and Greenwich, while Norwood is split between several boroughs. Richmond upon Thames spans both banks of the Thames, and Twickenham is on the north bank, so it is also covered on the West London page. If you are unsure, give us the postcode.

Typical South London moves

Inner south: flats and conversions

Around Brixton, Peckham, Camberwell and Bermondsey, many homes are flats. Floors, lifts and the carry from the van are the main questions.

Outer south: family houses

In Croydon, Bromley, Sutton and Bexley, a move is often a house. Volume, loft and garage contents, and driveways come into it.

Moves across the river

A move between north and south of the Thames crosses the river. Give us both postcodes so the quote reflects the real journey.

Riverside apartments

Some riverside blocks have their own management and loading rules. Ask about lift booking and moving hours.

Heavy furniture and stairs

Sofas, wardrobes and appliances on stairs are a two-mover job.

Small moves and collections

A single item or a few boxes is a man and van job. Seller collections are on the furniture page.

Parking, loading and charges in South London

Loading and waiting rules depend on the signs and markings at your address. The Highway Code sets out the national rules on yellow lines and loading, and TfL's red routes page covers red routes. Boroughs publish their own loading guidance. Southwark's page on loading and unloading sets time limits for loading on yellow lines and in bays, but it is written for deliveries and trades, so ask the council how it applies to a house move. Find your own council through your local council and check early whether a permit or bay suspension is needed.

If a move runs between South East and East London, check the river crossings: TfL charges for each crossing of the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels, in both directions, during its charging hours (see the tunnels charge page). The ULEZ covers every London borough, so it depends on the vehicle rather than the area, and a route that heads into the centre may touch the Congestion Charge zone. See TfL's ULEZ and Congestion Charge pages, and ask us whether any charge is included in your quote.

South London removals FAQs

Where do south west and south east London start and end?

There is no official boundary. This page groups the boroughs into south west, inner south and south east, and Croydon sits in between. Put your postcodes on the quote form and the journey is planned from those.

I am moving from south to north of the river. Does that change the job?

It changes the route and the distance. Put both postcodes on the form so the quote reflects the actual journey, and ask us whether any river crossing charge is included.

Is a man and van enough for a house in Sutton or Bexley?

For a small home with little furniture it can be. For a larger family home see house removals, and tell us the bedrooms and any loft or garage.

Are Richmond and Twickenham in South London?

Richmond upon Thames spans both banks of the Thames, and Twickenham is on the north bank. The borough is covered on this page and on the West London page.

Does Southwark's loading page apply to a house move?

It is written for deliveries and trades, so ask the council how it applies to a removal. See the page for the time limits it sets for loading on yellow lines and in bays.
