East London is a large area, and moves vary

East London runs from the edge of the City out to the Essex border. A one-bedroom flat in a managed apartment block near Stratford or Canary Wharf is a very different job to a three-bedroom family house in Ilford, Romford or Upminster, or a first-floor flat in a converted terrace in Hackney or Leyton. In one the questions are floors and lifts; in another they are driveways and the size of the load.

Areas by borough

Neighbourhood names cross borough lines, so we group them by the borough that mainly covers them. If you are not sure which borough you are in, give us the postcode.

Common East London moves, and what to tell us

Apartments in managed blocks

Newer blocks near Stratford, Canning Town and the Docklands may have their own management. Ask about lift booking, moving hours and where vans are meant to load, and tell us what you are told.

Flats in converted houses

A flat above or within a converted terrace usually means stairs and a narrow hallway. Give us the floor and the flights, and list any large furniture.

Family houses further out

In the outer east, the question is usually volume. Tell us the number of bedrooms and any loft, garage or garden storage. See house removals.

House shares and student moves

Several people, several rooms and not much furniture each. A man and van may be enough; say how many bedrooms and boxes.

Marketplace collections

Furniture bought from a seller across the borough. Details are on furniture collection and delivery.

Heavy items and stairs

Wardrobes, sofas and appliances up stairs are a two-mover job. Tell us the sizes.

Parking, permits and charges

Parking and loading are usually controlled by the local council or, on TfL red routes, by Transport for London. Some boroughs also run red routes on their own roads, and private estates set their own rules, which matters for flats. Stopping on a red route outside a marked bay can lead to a penalty charge notice, so check the signs. The national rules on yellow lines and loading are in the Highway Code, and TfL explains its red routes. Each East London borough has its own arrangements for permits and for protecting a space for a van, which you can find through your local council.

If a move runs between East and South East London, check the river crossings. TfL charges for each crossing of the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels, in both directions, during its charging hours (see the tunnels charge page). The ULEZ covers all London boroughs, so it depends on the vehicle rather than the area, and the Congestion Charge applies only in a defined area of Central London. See the ULEZ and Congestion Charge pages, and ask us whether any charge is included in your quote.

What helps us plan an East London move

  • Whether each address is a managed block (lift booking, moving hours) or a street-level home.
  • Floors and flights where there is no lift.
  • Whether the move crosses the river.
  • Where the van can stop, and whether the street is in a controlled parking zone.
  • Loft, garage or garden storage for larger homes.
  • Large or heavy items, with sizes if you have them.

East London removals FAQs

Is there a charge for crossing the river by the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel?

TfL charges for each crossing of both tunnels, in both directions, during its charging hours. See the tunnels charge page, and ask us whether any charge is included in your quote if your move crosses the river.

What should I ask my managing agent if I live near Canary Wharf or Stratford?

Whether there is a moving policy, whether the lift has to be booked, what hours moves are allowed, and where the van is meant to load. Add the answers to the quote form.

Is a man and van enough for a house in Ilford or Romford?

It depends on the size of the house and how much furniture there is. For a small home with little furniture it can be. For a larger family home see house removals, and tell us the number of bedrooms.

Do parking rules differ between East London boroughs?

Yes. Each borough controls its own streets and publishes its own rules for permits and bay suspensions. Find yours through find your local council and tell us what is arranged.

Which Plaistow do you mean?

The Plaistow on this page is the one in Newham, East London. There is another in the London Borough of Bromley. Put the full postcodes on the quote form so the journey is planned correctly.
