The Green Man roundabout, our busiest breakdown point
The Green Man roundabout sits where the A12 dives underground beneath the junction of High Road Leytonstone, Whipps Cross Road (A114), New Wanstead and Grove Green Road (A106). It is a grade separated interchange, meaning what you see at street level, buses queuing, cars filtering onto four different roads, is only half the junction: the trunk road itself runs in a cutting underneath. The Department for Transport counted 81,765 vehicles a day on the A12 link just west of it in 2025, including nearly 17,000 LGVs and almost 2,000 HGVs. If your car stops on the surface roundabout, we can generally reach you and work around the traffic. If it stops on the A12 carriageway itself, that is a different call, one we explain below.

The A12 cutting, a road you cannot pull over on
The A12 through Leytonstone and Wanstead was built in the 1990s as the Hackney to M11 link road, four miles of dual carriageway driven through streets that had stood for a century, at a cost of around 350 to 400 homes compulsorily purchased and demolished. It is the reason the area still feels cut in two: old east-west streets that once ran through now stop at a fence or a footbridge. Running mostly below ground level, the road gives a broken-down driver almost nowhere to stop safely, and nowhere legal either. It is part of the TfL Road Network and covered by the A12 Trunk Road (Redbridge) Red Route Traffic Order, in force since October 1999, restricting stopping 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday; a red route PCN is £160, reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days.
Under Wanstead, the road disappears entirely into a 175 metre cut and cover tunnel beneath George Green, a piece of engineering that cost a 250 year old sweet chestnut tree its life on 7 December 1993. If you break down inside that tunnel or in the open cutting either side of it, do not attempt to wait with the vehicle on the carriageway. Whipps Cross Road and the hospital corridor
Running north west from the Green Man roundabout past Hollow Ponds to Whipps Cross, the A114 carries around 20,000 vehicles a day, plus sixteen buses an hour on route 257 at peak, past the entrance to Whipps Cross University Hospital. Between October 2017 and October 2023 there were 32 collisions and 39 casualties recorded on this stretch, three of them serious. It is a road we are on often, not because it is remarkable to look at but because it connects the hospital, the forest, and the junction at Whipps Cross itself, rebuilt from a 1920s roundabout into a signal controlled junction between 2017 and spring 2019 as part of a £15m scheme. One access point worth knowing if you are heading for the hospital rather than a breakdown: the Hollow Ponds car park off Whipps Cross Road has a 2.2 metre height barrier, so our recovery trucks cannot get in. The hospital's own car park has no such restriction.
Redbridge Roundabout and the run down into Wanstead
At the Redbridge end of the patch, the A12 meets the North Circular (A406) at Redbridge Roundabout, a signalised spiral with the A406 carried overhead on a viaduct. The DfT counted 88,243 vehicles a day on the A12 link into it in 2025, including over 2,400 HGVs, and it has a long standing reputation locally as an awkward junction to break down near: the spiral lane markings commit you to an exit early, so a driver who develops a fault often ends up further round than they meant to be. From there the A12 runs the short distance towards George Green and Wanstead High Street, close to Snaresbrook Crown Court on Hollybush Hill, a Grade II listed building that is the busiest Crown Court centre in the country. If your breakdown happens on this stretch, tell us which exit or landmark you passed most recently; on a spiral roundabout that is more useful to us than a junction number.
Narrow terraces, CPZs, and where a truck can actually stop
Away from the main roads, Leytonstone is Victorian terraces with parking on both sides, particularly across the Bushwood, Fillebrook and Wallwood estates and the Cann Hall grid. A recovery truck needs more room than a car to position safely, and on these streets that often means working around parked cars rather than pulling in directly behind you.
Much of the area is also controlled parking. The South Leytonstone LTN and one way traps
Cann Hall Road, Odessa Road, Dames Road and Woodgrange Road sit inside London's first cross borough Low Traffic Neighbourhood, built with Newham from August 2020 and made permanent in spring 2022, with five of its modal filters on the Waltham Forest side. Some filters are physical planters, some are camera only, and either way a route that looks like the shortest way on a map may simply not be open to a vehicle. Nearby, Mornington Road and Harvey Road are one way and mobile CCTV enforced, and there is a no entry into High Road E11 from Kirkdale Road at any time, with a camera enforced yellow box further along at the Gainsborough Road junction.
