The A1, Britain’s historic Great North Road, has carried traffic between London and Edinburgh for over a century, and today mixes two genuine A1(M) motorway sections with hundreds of miles of ordinary dual carriageway serving Peterborough, Grantham, Doncaster, York, Durham and Newcastle along the way. The A1, the Great North Road, runs around 410 miles from London to Edinburgh and has been the main trunk route north since it was designated in 1921. Two stretches have been upgraded to full motorway standard as the A1(M): a 23-mile section from the M25 to Stotfold in Hertfordshire, built between 1962 and 1986, and a 13-mile section from Walshford to Dishforth in North Yorkshire, upgraded in 1995. The rest of the route, passing Peterborough, Grantham, Newark, Doncaster, York, Darlington and Newcastle, runs as an ordinary dual carriageway, with 39 service areas along the whole length including Baldock, Peterborough, Grantham North, Markham Moor, Wetherby, Scotch Corner, Durham and Washington.
Only the two A1(M) motorway sections, in Hertfordshire and North Yorkshire, are built to full motorway standard with the emergency refuge areas that come with it. A planned smart-motorway upgrade for the Welwyn North to Hitchin section, which would have added hard-shoulder running, was announced in 2014 and has since been cancelled, so that stretch still has no hard shoulder today. Everywhere else on the A1, including the long dual-carriageway stretches through Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland, there is no hard shoulder at all: if a tyre goes, the safest option is to get as far onto the verge as the road allows and put your hazards on, rather than assume a hard shoulder exists.

Flat tyre on the A1? What to do
A flat on a live motorway is one of the most dangerous places to break down. Follow these steps, then call us.
1. Get off the motorway if you can
If the tyre will bear it, keep your speed down and leave at the next exit or reach the next service area. A wheel rim is cheaper to replace than a life, and being off the carriageway is far safer than any hard shoulder.
2. Pull as far left as you can
Where the A1 runs as the genuine A1(M) motorway, through Hertfordshire or North Yorkshire, use the hard shoulder if there is one: hard against the left, wheels turned left, hazards on. Everywhere else on the ordinary A1, including the cancelled-smart-motorway stretch between Welwyn North and Hitchin, there is no hard shoulder at all, so get as far onto the verge as the road allows, well clear of the traffic lane, and put your hazards on immediately.
3. Get out of the left-hand doors and behind the barrier
Leave the vehicle by the passenger side, take everyone with you, and get behind the safety barrier and up the bank, away from the traffic. Leave animals in the vehicle unless they are in immediate danger.
4. Do not change the tyre yourself
Changing a wheel on a hard shoulder or in a live lane is one of the most dangerous things you can do on a motorway. Do not attempt it, however simple it looks. If you are stuck in a live lane and cannot get out safely, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
5. Call us with your exact location

6. Wait behind the barrier

Debris and road litter

Underinflation

Potholes and kerbing

Age, wear and perishing
Tyres perish with age even with tread left on them, and the legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. Worn or perished tyres are the first to fail under sustained motorway heat and load.

My car has run-flat tyres, do I still need you on the A1?
Run-flats let you keep going a limited distance at reduced speed, typically around 50 miles at up to 50mph, but that is a get-you-off-the-A1 measure, not a repair, and many run-flats cannot be repaired at all once run flat. Leave at the next exit if you safely can, then call us to supply and fit a replacement or recover you.
My tyre pressure warning light has come on near Peterborough Services, can I carry on?
Treat it as a warning that something is wrong. A slow puncture can become a blowout at A1 speeds. Ease off, leave at the next exit if you can do so safely and check the tyre. If it is going down, do not carry on, get somewhere safe and call us.
What is the legal tyre tread depth for driving the A1?
The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference, the same limit anywhere in the UK. Below that you risk a fine and penalty points for each illegal tyre, and grip and wet braking fall away long before you reach the limit.
