The final clamp is the one people get wrong: rather than connecting it to the negative terminal of the flat battery, connect it to an earthed metal point on the flat car, such as a bolt on the engine block or a strut mount, away from the battery itself. This keeps the last connection, the one most likely to spark as it's made, away from the battery, where hydrogen gas can collect.
Start the donor vehicle (or switch on the pack) and give it a short while before trying the flat car. Once it starts, remove the clamps in the reverse order to how they went on: the earthed black clamp first, then the donor's black clamp, then the donor's red clamp, and finally the red clamp on the car that was flat. Keep the engine running for a while afterwards, ideally with a proper drive rather than idling on the drive, so the alternator can put some charge back before you switch off again.
