The M23 is the road to Gatwick, and a flat tyre on it usually means a flight at risk, on a stretch that runs all lanes with no hard shoulder past the airport. Our tyre vans cover the M23 and the M25 interchange, so we can reach your junction, change the wheel or fit a replacement, and get you to the terminal.
Where we reach you on the M23
The M23 is a short but heavily used motorway running from Junction 7 at the M25 near Hooley down to Junction 11 at Pease Pottage, where it becomes the A23 for Brighton. Its reason for existing is Gatwick Airport at Junction 9 and 9a, and it carries constant airport, freight and Sussex commuter traffic.
The M23 between Junctions 8 and 10 runs as smart motorway with all-lane running and no permanent hard shoulder, which is the stretch right past Gatwick. If a tyre goes there your only place to stop is an emergency refuge area, so aim for the next refuge or exit, and if you stop in a live lane stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
Flat tyre on the M23? What to do
A flat on a live motorway is one of the most dangerous places to break down. Follow these steps, then call us.
1. Get off the motorway if you can
If the tyre will bear it, keep your speed down and leave at the next exit or reach the next service area. A wheel rim is cheaper to replace than a life, and being off the carriageway is far safer than any hard shoulder.
2. Pull as far left as you can
Use the hard shoulder where the M23 has one: hard left, wheels turned left, hazards on. Between Junctions 8 and 10, the stretch running past Gatwick, it is all-lane running with no permanent hard shoulder, so there an emergency refuge area or the next exit is the only safe option.
3. Get out of the left-hand doors and behind the barrier
Leave the vehicle by the passenger side, take everyone with you, and get behind the safety barrier and up the bank, away from the traffic. Leave animals in the vehicle unless they are in immediate danger.
4. Do not change the tyre yourself
Changing a wheel on a hard shoulder or in a live lane is one of the most dangerous things you can do on a motorway. Do not attempt it, however simple it looks. If you are stuck in a live lane and cannot get out safely, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
5. Call us with your exact location
Ring 07960 200253. Give the motorway, the junction you last passed, the direction of travel and the number on the nearest blue marker post or the driver location sign. That pins you to within 100 metres so we reach you fast.
6. Wait behind the barrier
Stay off the carriageway until our tyre van arrives. We work with the correct warning equipment, change the wheel or fit your spare, and get you moving safely.
What our mobile tyre service covers on the M23
Wheel change to your spare
If you carry a spare or a space-saver, we fit it safely with the right equipment and torque it correctly, then get you on your way.
No spare? We supply and fit
Most new cars carry no spare, only a sealant kit that will not fix a sidewall or a blowout. We can supply and fit a matching tyre, or recover you to a fitter.
Locking nuts and seized wheels
Lost the locking wheel-nut key, or the wheel is seized to the hub? We carry the tools to deal with both without damaging the car.
Blowouts and shredded tyres
If the tyre is destroyed, the wheel is damaged or there is no safe way to fit a replacement on the carriageway, we recover the vehicle instead.
Why tyres fail on the M23
Most motorway tyre failures come down to four things. Knowing them is the cheapest way to avoid ever needing us.
Debris and road litter
Motorways collect shed loads, exhaust parts, bolts and the shredded carcasses of blown lorry tyres. At 70mph a piece of metal opens a sidewall instantly, and there is no repairing a sidewall cut.
Underinflation
The most common cause of a blowout. An underinflated tyre flexes and overheats at sustained motorway speed until the structure fails. Checking pressures cold before a long run prevents more motorway blowouts than anything else.
Potholes and kerbing
A pothole strike or a kerbed wheel on the way to the motorway can crack a sidewall or buckle the rim without any obvious sign, then let go later at speed when the tyre is hot and loaded.
Age, wear and perishing
Tyres perish with age even with tread left on them, and the legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. Worn or perished tyres are the first to fail under motorway heat and load.
Motorway mobile tyre prices on the M23
| Service | From |
|---|---|
| Motorway mobile tyre change (live motorway) | £250 to £750 |
| Ordinary roads, off the motorway network | from £90 |
| Recovery if the tyre cannot be changed safely | from £90 |
Motorway tyre work runs from £250 to £750. It costs more than an ordinary roadside tyre change because it is carried out on a live, high-speed carriageway with the correct warning equipment and safety procedures. Where you land in that range depends on the tyre size and type, whether we fit your own spare or supply a new tyre, the vehicle, where you are on the network and the time of day. A common car tyre fitted to a standard car sits at the lower end; a large, low-profile, run-flat or 4×4 tyre supplied at night sits at the upper end. We agree the exact figure on the phone before we set off. No call-out fee.

Aisha K.M23 mobile tyre FAQs
Do you cover the M23 at Gatwick Airport?
Yes. We cover the M23 from Junction 7 at the M25 to Junction 11 at Pease Pottage, including Junctions 9 and 9a for Gatwick Airport. If you have a flight, tell us when you call and we will give you a realistic arrival time.
Does the M23 have a hard shoulder near Gatwick?
Between Junctions 8 and 10, the stretch past Gatwick, the M23 runs as smart motorway with all lanes open and no permanent hard shoulder. Your only refuge is an emergency refuge area, so head for one or the next exit if your tyre will bear it.
How much is a mobile tyre change on the M23?
Motorway mobile tyre change runs from £250 to £750. It costs more than an ordinary roadside tyre change (from £90) because it is done on a live, high-speed carriageway with the correct warning equipment and safety procedures. A common tyre on a standard car sits at the lower end; a large, low-profile, run-flat or 4×4 tyre supplied at night sits at the upper end. We agree the exact figure on the phone before we set off.
Can you fit a tyre if I have no spare on the M23?
Yes. Most new cars carry no spare, only a sealant kit, which cannot fix a sidewall cut or a blowout. We can supply and fit a matching tyre at the roadside where it is safe to do so, or recover you to a fitter if it is not.
Should I change the tyre myself on the M23 hard shoulder?
No. Changing a wheel on a hard shoulder or in a live lane is one of the most dangerous things you can do on a motorway. Get everyone out of the left-hand doors and behind the safety barrier, and call us. If you are stuck in a live lane and cannot get out safely, stay belted in with your hazards on and call 999.
How do I tell you exactly where I am on the M23?
Give us the motorway, the last junction you passed, your direction of travel, and the number on the nearest blue marker post or the driver location sign on the verge. That pins your position to within about 100 metres so we reach you quickly.
Can you change tyres on vans and 4x4s?
Yes. We change tyres on cars, vans, 4x4s and light commercials, and carry the equipment for larger wheels, locking nuts and wheels seized to the hub.
My car has run-flat tyres, do I still need you?
Run-flats let you keep going a limited distance at reduced speed, typically around 50 miles at up to 50mph, but that is a get-you-off-the-motorway measure, not a repair, and many run-flats cannot be repaired at all once run flat. Leave at the next exit if you safely can, then call us to supply and fit a replacement or recover you.
My tyre pressure warning light has come on, can I carry on?
Treat it as a warning that something is wrong. A slow puncture can become a blowout at motorway speed. Ease off, leave at the next exit if you can do so safely and check the tyre. If it is going down, do not carry on, get somewhere safe and call us.
What is the legal tyre tread depth in the UK?
The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference. Below that you risk a fine and penalty points for each illegal tyre, and grip and wet braking fall away long before you reach the limit. Any tyre we supply and fit is legal and correctly matched to your vehicle.
